How to Verify a New Jersey Plumbing or HVAC License

Step by step

1. Go to the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs license verification at newjersey.mylicense.com.
2. Search by name or license number under the relevant board (Master Plumbers, or HVACR Contractors).
3. Confirm the license is active and the name matches the business on your estimate.
4. Ask for the certificate of liability insurance — licensing and insurance are separate checks.

Red flags

• No license number on the estimate, contract or vehicle — NJ master plumbers must display their license number.
• “We work under someone else's license” with no connection you can verify.
• Pressure to skip permits — water heater swaps, boiler and furnace replacements generally require permits in New Jersey.
